Pulaski County 2012 GEAR UP Team receives Golden Apple Award

The Pulaski County School Board presented Golden Apple Awards to the Pulaski County 2012 GEAR UP Team during their most recent meeting.
Alice Funk, lead regional manager for GEAR UP, Erin Wigginton, GEAR UP program coordinator, Phil Vickers, GEAR UP data coordinator, and Ginny Hagee, GEAR UP middle school coordinator, have worked together over the past three years to provide academic, cultural, social and career exploration programs and resources for the 2012 GEAR UP cohort.
Because of this group’s work with GEAR UP, the Pulaski County School Board presented them with Golden Apple Awards.
GEAR UP stands for Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs. Virginia’s GEAR UP program has expanded the state’s efforts to assist low-income students to attend and succeed in post secondary education by providing early intervention services and a scholarship program for eligible students who demonstrate financial need.
“Through dedication and collaboration, this group achieved far more than any of them could have achieved alone,” said Dr. Don Stowers, superintendent of schools, as he made this award presentation. “Our students have benefitted greatly from their efforts.”
