Opposition mounts to AEP rate increase

CHRISTIANSBURG – Delegate Dave Nutter joined a bi-partisan coalition of fourteen area state legislators who have publicly requested American Electric Power drop their proposed rate increase due to difficult economic times that citizens all over the Commonwealth are confronting.
“It is critical for the citizens of the New River Valley to stand up and say enough is enough,” said Delegate Nutter. “Given this is third rate increase in as many years, I hope AEP will decide to withdraw their requested rate increase or the SCC will disallow it.”
Following the legislative outcry to the AEP proposal, the State Corporation Commission has agreed to hold a Southwest Virginia public hearing in Wytheville. Nutter said he is pleased the SCC has already responded to the legislators request to hold a public hearing in Southwest Virginia.
The SCC will hold its hearing beginning at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, July 1, 2009 in Wytheville. The hearing will take place in the Snyder Auditorium at Wytheville Community College, 1000 East Main Street.
“Some people think their voices don’t count, but public comment periods matter,” said Delegate Nutter, adding that citizens who are unable to attend can still express opposition to the proposed rate increase directly to the SCC.
Written comments should be addressed to the Clerk of the State Corporation Commission, Document Control Center, P.O. Box 2118, Richmond, VA 23218-2118 and refer to case number PUE-2009-00038.
