VDOT seeks comments on Miller Lane plans

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking written comments on its plan to restrict through truck traffic on Miller Lane between Possum Hollow and Newbern roads.
Last fall, Pulaski County Board of Supervisors unanimously approved the restriction due to repeated incidents of semi-trucks becoming stuck in sharp curves on the stretch of road.
Anyone wishing to comment on the proposal is asked to send written comments to area Resident Engineer David Clarke, VDOT Christiansburg Residency, P.O. Box 420, Christiansburg, VA 24073. The deadline is June 16.
Some supervisors suggested imposing a restriction on through truck traffic on the road as the result of semi-trucks getting stuck while trying to use the curvy road as a shortcut between Old Route 100 and Bob White Boulevard.
"They’ve torn the banks all apart out there," said Massie District Supervisor Frank Conner. "They just can’t get through there."
Although there have been problems with trucks getting stuck there from time to time over the years, the problem escalated when a section of Newbern Road was closed for a period of time to repair a damaged bridge at the Cougar Trail intersection. At that point, authorities said several trucks were becoming stuck on the road every week.
The restriction would prohibit trucks with gross weights over 7,500 pounds from traveling the road.
