On April 16, 2009, Gloria H. Lilly, wife of Dr. David H. Lilly and mother of Sara and Jon Lilly, died at Pulaski Community Hospital at the age of 63.
Gloria was born in Welch, W.Va., to Forrest Hicks and Ardelia Meade on April 6, 1946. She grew up in a coal camp in Logan, W.Va., where she attended Sunshine Elementary and Logan Junior High schools and was known as a model student. In 1960, Gloria’s family relocated to Dublin, where she attended Dublin High School.
Following high school, Gloria attended business and nursing school for a short time before marrying David in June 1968. She and David lived in Jacksonville, Fla. and Philadelphia, Penn., before returning to the area in January 1972. At that time they built their first home in Newbern, and adopted their two children, Sara in 1974 and Jon in 1977.
Gloria worked throughout her life, from assisting her husband in various capacities at Pulaski Animal Clinic to running her own shoe and candle businesses. Gloria was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, cousin and a best friend to many. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, singing, dancing, studying the bible and caring for her family and loved ones.
Gloria is survived by her husband, two children and the following family members: sisters Wanda Dardi of Logan, W.Va. and Wilda and Jim McNeil and children of Dunbar, W.Va.; niece Bonnie Blevins of Logan, W.Va.; nephews Wetz and Ann Blevins and children of Dunbar, W.Va., and J.B. and Sandy Dardi and children of Logan, W.Va.
Gloria is also survived by in-laws Margaret, Bill Welsh and children of Oakton, and Patsy, Al Caldwell and children of Fairlawn.
The families are planning a public memorial celebration for Gloria in Pulaski County on May 9, 2009. Details of the celebration will be forthcoming. The families request that donations be made in Gloria’s honor to the Pulaski County Humane Society or the American Diabetes Association.
