Kanode indicted in connection with murder

A second man has been indicted in connection with the January 2008 murder of Dawn Meredith Wright of Radford.
According to indictments released Wednesday, French David Kanode of Dublin is charged with solicitation of murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Kanode was named in the woman’s murder by Richard Forest Mabry, who pleaded guilty in December to first-degree murder in Wright’s death.
Mabry claims Kanode told him to murder Wright as part of an initiation, known as “blood in – blood out,” into the Pagan’s Outlaw Motorcycle Gang. According to Mabry, Kanode an alleged represented the gang.
Mabry is serving 30 years of a 50-year prison sentence for Wright’s murder.
Wright’s body was found several feet off a gravel road in the "Bloomer’s Mountain" section of the county Jan. 23, 2008.
Summarizing the evidence in Mabry’s case, Commonwealth’s Attorney Mike Fleenor said an autopsy determined Wright died of multiple stab wounds to the chest and back. Police learned she was last seen Jan. 21, when she left her Radford residence with two men identified as Mabry and Kanode.
During questioning, Fleenor said, Mabry admitted he and Kanode had gone to Wright’s residence, and that they talked her into leaving with them.
After going to two Radford businesses, Mabry and Wright dropped Kanode off at a residence off Black Hollow Road and then drove a short distance up "Bloomer’s Mountain," Fleenor said. He indicated Mabry gave police two different statements about what happened on the mountain.
First, Mabry indicated he stabbed Wright once in the leg in self-defense after they became involved in an argument. Mabry claimed the lethal wounds were the result of Wright falling on the knife.
Later, Mabry recanted the self-defense claim and said he killed Wright intentionally in order to join the Pagan’s, the prosecutor said.
Mabry told police he stopped the van he was driving and pulled out a knife, stabbing Wright once in the chest. Wright ran from the van, but Mabry caught up with her and stabbed her repeatedly. Hen then dragged her body across the road where it was discovered two days later.
Fleenor said it was apparent from the impressions in the snow on the road and on an embankment that a struggle had taken place.
Fleenor said Mabry returned to the residence where Kanode was left, but Kanode was gone. At that point, he said, Mabry allegedly went to Kanode’s residence and told Kanode about the murder.
Fleenor said Mabry insisted he committed the crime because of Kanode allegedly had threatened to kill Mabry’s family if Mabry didn’t go through with the murder.
Kanode is being held in New River Valley Regional Jail. No court dates have been set.
