Robert Lee Rupe, 73, of Haysom Street, Portsmouth, Va., died March 18, 2009 in his home. A native of Pulaski, Va. he retired in 1997 as a painter from Local 1100 and was an Army veteran of Korea. Survivors include his wife, Bertha Rupe, one daughter Cathy A. Maitland and husband Bill; three sons Tab G. Rupe and wife Denise, M. Scott Rupe and wife Daria, and Chris E. Rupe and wife Patty; one sister, Katie Cook of Roanoke, Va.; seven grandchildren, Stephanie Sudderth and husband Mike, Tabatha Grubbs and husband Kevin, Amy Hefferman and husband Matt, John Robert Short, Nicholas Rupe, Sydney Rupe and Easton Rupe; three great grandchildren, Ethan Crumb, and Carson and Clare Hefferman; six step-grandchildren, Troy Howard and wife Mandy; Tabetha Whitehurst and husband John; Amanda, Aimee and Jordan Boucher, and Andrew Sudderth; and six step-great grandchildren, Mikayla McKencie, Kelsey, Nathan and Natalie Howard, and Jordan and Gavin Whitehurst. He was predeceased by his parents, Joseph Lee and Nanie C. Rupe; and four siblings, Jesse Rupe, Joseph Rupe, Sadie Nester and Carrie Eads.
A funeral service will be held on Saturday, Mar. 21 at 1:00 p.m. in Sturtevant Funeral Home, Portsmouth Blvd. Chapel. Burial with military honors will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. The family will receive friends at the funeral home Friday from 7-8:30 p.m.
