Slaying suspect to get mental exam

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — A Virginia Tech doctoral student accused of killing a fellow student in a campus cafe has been transferred to a state mental hospital and will receive a mental evaluation.
Attorneys at a motions hearing Wednesday disagreed about whether it’s necessary to have a doctor who speaks Mandarin Chinese evaluate 25-year-old Haiyang Zhu (hy-yuhng-joo). That is his native language.
Zhu is charged with first-degree murder in the death of 22-year-old Xin Yang (shin yuhng). The Chinese woman was beheaded in a cafe where she had met Zhu for coffee Jan. 21.
Montgomery County General District Court Judge Gino Williams delayed a ruling to review the case further.
A preliminary hearing for Zhu scheduled March 5 was delayed to April 23.
