Ex-VT chief, Lavery dies

BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Former Virginia Tech President William E. Lavery has died at age 78.
A spokesman for McCoy Funeral Home, Mike Rorrer, said Tuesday that Lavery died Monday night at a hospital.
Lavery emphasized research during his tenure from 1975 to 1987. Research expenditures totaled more than $70 million by fiscal 1987, moving Virginia Tech into the nation’s top 50 research institutions.
Classroom, laboratory and office space increased by 50 percent during Lavery’s tenure. In addition, the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine was established.
A native of Geneseo, N.Y., Lavery started at Virginia Tech in 1966 as director of administration for the Extension division.
He received his doctorate from the University of Wisconsin, and his undergraduate degree from Michigan State University.
He and his wife, Peggy, had four children.
A funeral Mass is scheduled Friday.
