Nelma Smith Covey, age 71 of Pulaski, died Monday evening Feb. 16, 2009 in New River Valley Medical Center. She was born May 23, 1937 in Pulaski, and was the daughter of the late Lelia Baine Smith and William Thurman Smith. She was an active member of Gethsemane Baptist Church in Radford where she was well known for providing homemade meals for the bereaved. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a son Thurman Lee Covey; two brothers Junior Smith and Elwood Smith and a sister Cathrine Smith. She is survived by her husband, Wilbur Lee Covey of Pulaski; a son Mike Covey of Pulaski; two daughters Deborah L. Edwards and her husband Richard E. of Powhatan, Virginia and Brenda Trahan and her husband Obray of League City, Texas; two brothers Neville Smith of Pulaski, and Bobby Smith of Mississippi, two sisters Melva Wade of Pulaski, and Daphne Edwards of Draper. Also survived by ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Thursday, Feb. 19, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. at the Gethsemane Baptist Church in Radford with Pastor Jerry Gibson officiating. Interment will follow in the Hufford Cemetery on Mt. Olivet Road in Pulaski. The family will receive friends at the church on Thursday from 12:30 until 2:00 p.m. Flowers will be appreciated, but for those who wish, they may make memorial contributions in her memory to the Gethsemane Baptist Church.
