Fund-raiser held for Bane family

Due to the generosity of Pulaski and Radford basketball fans, the Pulaski County Cougar Cheerleaders were able to raise more than $1,700 in donations Saturday to assist the family of Joseph Foster Bane, who was shot and killed a week ago.
The donations for Sharon Bane and her children were collected at the Cougars’ and Bobcats’ basketball game Saturday.
The Banes’ neighbor, Douglas Albert Jaccard, is jailed and facing more than a dozen charges, including murder and arson, for allegedly shooting Joseph Bane and setting the family’s home on fire last Tuesday morning. The home was leveled by the fire.
Saturday night, drop boxes were set up at the door for clothing and other donations of material items. Plus, the cheerleaders went into the stands to collect monetary donations from the fans.
The effort resulted in $1,700 in cash collections and several boxes of household and clothing items.
Pulaski County Cheer Coach Angie Harrell and her assistants helped to organize the fund-raiser. Both the junior varsity and varsity cheerleaders participated in the collections.
The fund-raiser was approved by PCHS Principal Rod Reedy and Athletic Director Mike Goff.
In an effort to boost the drive, the Cougar Cheerleaders are challenging every New River Valley High School to match or beat what they collected for the Banes.
For more information, or to arrange for transportation or storage of clothing and household items, contact David Gravely at cougardave23@comcast.net. Items will be stored at Dublin Church of God until the Banes are ready for them. Call Pastor Mike Talbert at 674-6451 to drop donated items off at the church.
Monetary donations also can be taken to the American Red Cross in Radford and Wytheville. Checks may be made out to the American Red Cross, with a notation in the memo line that the donation is for the “Bane Family Fire.”
Checks also may be mailed to American Red Cross, P.O. Box 1416, Galax, VA 24333 or American Red Cross, Greater New River Valley Chapter, 616-A West Main Street, Radford, VA 24141.
Condolences may be mailed to the Bane family at: Bane Family, c/o Riverview Church of God, 2703 Wysor Hwy., Draper, VA 24324.
