Cougars beat George Wythe

In an uptempo and very physical game, the Pulaski County Cougars stretched a one-point halftime advantage into a 20-point lead late into the fourth quarter and beat the defending state champion George Wythe Maroons 82-68 Friday night in the Cougar Den.
George Wythe dropped to 2-2 on the season and the victory made the Cougars’ season record 3-2.
The Cougars led 29-28 at the half, but their full-court press starting the second half produced three straight turnovers and Pulaski County converted them into eight quick points.
“The beginning of the second half was big,” said Pulaski County head coach Mark Hanks.
With the Cougars up 51-41 going into the last quarter, the pace was fast and furious and fouling.
There were 51 fouls called in the game and 67 foul shots.
The Cougars hit 15-of-17 from the charity stripe in the quarter as they outscored the Maroons 31-27.
“That was two teams tonight who like to get up and down the court,” Hanks stated. “Their zone was a problem for us and that is a team that knows how to win.”
The Cougars were led in scoring by Nubian Peak and Carter White, both with 15 points.
Zane Quesenberry and Ondre Powell tossed in 9 point each.
White had 6 rebounds, Travis Cox and Peak had 5.
Tevin Mattox had 5 assists and White had 5 steals.
George Wythe’s Kenneth Waugh was the leading scorer in the game as he tossed in 27 points. He made five three-pointers.
The Cougars will now go to Wytheville Monday night and face the same Maroons with junior varsity action beginning at 6 p.m. and the varsity playing at 7:30 p.m.
The Pulaski County freshmen play at the Cougar Den on Tuesday night at 6 p.m. against Franklin County.
