Radford comes from behind against Giles

PEARISBURG — They say a cat has nine lives. The Radford Bobcats may have used four or five of theirs Friday night in front of a packed house at Giles High School.
The Bobcats overcame a two-touchdown deficit in the second half and sophomore quarterback Dontae Carter scored with just 31 seconds to play for a 35-28 hard fought Radford victory.
The late touchdown gave Radford its only lead of the night. With the win the Bobcats improve to 5-1 overall and 1-0 in Three Rivers District play. Giles fell to 3-3 and 0-1.
The two rivals played a scoreless first quarter, but on the second play of the second quarter, Giles running back Justin Gautier raced 21 yards for a touchdown and Virginia Tech signee Cody Journell’s PAT put the Spartans up, 7-0.
Journell then went 80 yards for a touchdown down the Radford sideline and his kick put the Spartans up 14-0 with three minutes to go before halftime.
Radford struck quickly with an answer as Patrick Webb ran down the Giles sideline for a 52-yard touchdown. Michael Goodman’s PAT made it 14-7 with just over a minute to go in the first half.
Giles came right back and drove the ball 76 yards on eight plays as Travis Robertson went over from the 1 yard line on fourth and goal. Journell added the PAT with just five seconds before halftime to put Giles up, 21-7.
Giles received the ball to start the second half and on third and nine from midfield, Journell attempted a rare pass from the single wing Spartans and it was intercepted by Radford’s Tyler Matusevich who returned it 41 yards to put the Bobcats in business at the Spartans’ 29 yard line.
The Bobcats got down to the Giles 7 yard line and on fourth down they pulled out a little trickery. Carter handed off to running back William Saunders who stopped and threw an option pass to Jon Thompson for the score to make it 21-14 Giles with 8 minutes to go in the third quarter.
Giles went on one of their patented drives, driving the ball 73 yards on 12 plays and held the ball for six and a half minutes. Once again Journell took the ball down the right sideline, cut back across the field and scored on a 32-yard scamper. His point after put Giles up, 28-14 with 1:29 left in the third.
A minute later Carter hit Jon Thompson with a pass and Thompson went 77 yards to paydirt for Radford. Goodman’s kick brought Radford back to 28-21 after three quarters.
The fourth quarter saw each team exchange punts until Radford’s Carter his Webb with a 30-yard TD pass with 2 minutes left in the game. Goodman’s PAT tied the score at 28-all.
Radford once again stopped Giles on their own 14 yard line and Journell shanked a 12-yard punt. Giles was looking real tired and old momentum was on the black and gold sideline.
Radford started their winning drive on the Giles 26 with 1:28 to go. Dre Thompson ran for 16 yards and then for four more. On second and goal at the Spartans’ 4, Carter rolled out and ran into the endzone for a four-yard touchdown. Goodman’s kick with just 30 seconds to go in the game put Radford up 35-28 for the win.
“What a game. A heck of a ball game,” exclaimed Radford head coach Matthew Saunders afterward inside a loud and joyful Bobcat locker room.
“We are well conditioned and we have only three kids going both ways and I think that was a big factor in the game,” Saunders stated. “Our players won this game and my coaches made great adjustments at the half. I felt like we could score on them, I just didn’t know if we could stop them,” said Saunders.
Radford returns home next Friday to face the Auburn Eagles in the Bobcats’ homecoming game. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
