Radford loses first of season

CHRISTIANSBURG — On a perfect night for football, the Radford Bobcats came out on the short end of a hard-fought 20-13 loss to Christiansburg.
Radford’s sophomore quarterback Dontae Carter ran for one touchdown and threw for another on the night.
The Blue Demons got touchdown runs by running backs Keith Johnson and Greg Lee. Place kicker Brad Cox also kicked two field goals and two PATs in the Blue Demons’ victory.
Christiansburg (4-1) got on the board first as Lee raced 72 yards down the left sideline to paydirt to put the Blue Demons up 6-0. Cox’s PAT put the Demons up 7-0 at the 10:33 mark in the first quarter.
On the Blue Demons’ next possession they drove the ball 44 yards and Johnson’s one-yard plunge and Cox’s PAT put them up 14-0 with 4:48 showing.
Radford (4-1) was stymied on their next two drives and Christiansburg got a Cox 27-yard field goal with just three seconds to go in the first half and went into the dressing room up 17-0.
Radford had been held to just 12 yards rushing in the half by a stingy Christiansburg defense.
Radford received the second half kickoff and drove the ball 57 yards on 11 plays and scored on a Carter one-yard run. Michael Goodman’s point after made it 17-7 with 9 minutes left in the third quarter, and it was a ballgame again.
However, the Blue Demons answered the score with one of their own as they held the ball for nearly five minutes and settled for a Cox 28-yard field goal for a 20-7 lead.
Radford finally got back on the scoreboard when Carter hit Jon Thompson with a 30-yard pass and their two point conversion pass fell incomplete, but they had the lead at 20-13 with 6:19 to go in the game.
Not once, but twice the Blue Demons’ punter, Cox, pinned the ‘Cats inside the four yard line. On a fourth down and five at their own 25 yard line, Carter’s pass fell incomplete and the Demons had held on for a very hard-fought victory.
“I’m so proud of our kids and their effort,” Radford head coach Matthew Saunders said. “The second half we played tremendous. We got beat by a very, very good ballclub. They are so fast and quick. We tried to take away some things, but you can’t take away everything. My coaches had a great game plan and we are so much better than we were this time last year. Our 4-1 record is so much better than 1-4. We must prepare for the single wing and next week is big,” Saunders added.
Radford travels to defending district champions Giles for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff as Three Rivers District play begins.
