Willis man dies in crash

A Willis man died Sunday night after the motorcycle he was driving struck the side of a vehicle near Sheetz in Fairlawn.
Virginia State Police First Sgt. Mike Honaker said Shawn Brent Gerald, 28, of Suthpin Road in Willis was pronounced dead after being transported to New River Valley Medical Center with “extensive injuries.”
Honaker said Gerald was operating a 2003 Honda CBR 954 northbound on Route 11 when the 7:40 p.m. crash occurred. He said the motorcycle struck the side of a 2004 Hyundai Sonota being driven by Jerry Wayne Viars, 35, of Major Grahams Road in Max Meadows.
Police said Viars apparently was northbound on Route 11 when he attempted to make a left turn onto Round House Road, and pulled into the path of the motorcycle.
“Our preliminary investigation of this crash has led us to believe that Mr. Gerald was driving his motorcycle at a very high speed because he was involved in a race with another vehicle. Witnesses have reported that the motorcycle and the other vehicle traveled southbound from the traffic light at the intersection of Route 11 and Route 114 at excessively high rates of speed. Witnesses reported the other vehicle involved in the race to be a Ford Mustang. The Ford Mustang left the scene without stopping once the crash occurred. If anyone has any information related to this crash they should call the Dublin State Police office at (540) 643-2560,” Honaker stated.
Viars sustained minor injuries in the crash and was arrested by Trooper M. A. Newberry for driving under the influence of alcohol, Honaker said.
