Traffic will be rerouted

Traffic on a portion of Newbern Road will once again be rerouted starting Monday so the damaged Interstate 81 bridge overpass can be repaired.
The bridge was damaged Aug. 26 when a boom on a Pulaski County Public Service Authority truck struck the underside of the bridge.
Newbern Road was closed briefly at that time so a cover could be installed under the damaged beams. That reduced the height limit on Newbern Road to 13 feet 5 inches.
According to a press release from the Virginia Department of Transportation, the section of Newbern Road (Route 611) from Cougar Trail (Route 643) to Route 100 is expected to be closed through mid-November.
Newbern Road traffic will be detoured onto Cougar Trail and Old Route 100 (F-047 frontage road) while repairs are made.
The traffic flow also has been altered on the interstate at mile marker 97 since the bridge was damaged.
The left southbound lane of the bridge will remain closed until those repairs are completed, a VDOT spokeswoman said. Two lanes of that portion of I-81 will remain open for traffic: the right lane and a paved area on the shoulder.
The speed limit has been reduced to 45 miles per hour in the construction zone on the interstate.
An emergency repair contract in the amount of $272,810 was awarded to contractor DLB, Inc. for the necessary repairs.
