Road, I-81 lanes reopen after bridge mishap

NEWBERN — The Virginia Department of Transportation reopened Newbern Road Wednesday and paved the shoulder of Interstate 81 at mile marker 97 to allow two lanes of travel while bridge repairs are made.
A section of Newbern Road from Cougar Trail to Route 100, along with one lane of southbound I-81, was shut down Tuesday morning after a boom on a county-owned truck hit the interstate bridge overpass.
State Police said the truck driver failed to lower the boom enough to pass under the bridge as he traveled east on Newbern Road. The boom hit concrete beams on the lower side of the bridge, causing “extensive” damage.
VDOT determined the bridge remains “structurally sound,” but it does need repairs.
According to VDOT, road crews worked around the clock to pave the right shoulder of I-81 to make two 11-foot travel lanes. The left lane will remain closed indefinitely. Southbound traffic will be able to use the right lane and shoulder in that area of mile marker 97.
The speed limit also has been reduced from 65 miles per hour to 45 in the construction zone. Motorists are urged to use caution in this area.
A cover was installed under the damaged beams so Newbern Road could be reopened. That reduced the height limit on Newbern Road to 13 feet and five inches.
