Four-run fourth sends M’s to win over White Sox

Staff Report

BRISTOL — Jacob Shaffer’s three-run homer in the top of the fifth broke Tuesday’s game wide open as the Pulaski Mariners whipped the Bristol White Sox 8-2.
The win gave the Mariners 40 victories on the season and a 40-27 record in the Appalachian League.
Pulaski took the lead in the second and scored single runs in the third and fourth innings as well to lead 3-2 before the fifth inning uprising.
George Soto started things off with a single, and a passed ball sent him to second. Dwight Britton followed with a walk before Shaffer hit his blast to right field — his first homer of the season.
Mario Martinez then singled and eventually scored after a passed ball, a hit batter and a single by Guy Welsh.
Pulaski plated another run in the seventh and coasted the rest of the way home for the 8-2 victory behind the pitching of Jose Rios, Brent Gaphardt, Phillip Roy and Kyle Brown with Roy (4-0) getting the win.
Pulaski completes its regular season schedule tonight with a final game at Bristol beginning at 7:30 p.m.
The Mariners return home Wednesday to face Elizabethton in the first of a best-of-three championship series to determine the 2008 Appalachian League champions. (See related story.)
