Burlington spoils Pulaski’s celebration

PULASKI —  Five unearned runs in the top of the ninth inning helped the Burlington Royals put the Pulaski Mariners’ division championship celebration on hold at Calfee Park on Thursday night as the Royals won, 6-5.
The Mariners could have clinched the division title with a victory, but three errors in the final frame allowed the Royals to come from behind for the win.
Pulaski (37-25) built a four run lead as Juan Fuentes had two hits and two RBIs including a triple.  Mario Martinez added two hits and a RBI, while Jake Shaffer rapped out three hits.
Taylor Lewis pitched five scoreless innings for the Mariners to start the game striking out five and allowing just two hits.  Blake Nation took the loss in relief for Pulaski.
Burlington (23-38) got three hits two RBIs and two runs, including the game winning run from Julio Aparicio.  Roque Colon picked up the win in relief.
The Mariners will try again to take the division title on Friday night when they entertain the Royals in game two of the three-game series.
The Pulaski Mariners will play at home again Saturday against the Burlington Royals.  A win during this three-game series can clinch the Appalachian League Eastern Division title.  If the Mariners by some chance do not seal the deal against the Royals they will have only three more chances to secure the title when they travel to Bristol to play the White Sox in a three-game series, August 24-26.
Assuming there are no stumbling blocks along the way and the Mariners do win the title, the Appalachian League playoffs will start on Wednesday, Aug. 27, here in Pulaski at historic Calfee Park.
