Former AOA director will be sentenced

PULASKI — It’s been almost two years since a grand jury indicted Deborah Hughes Palmer for embezzling money from New River Valley Agency on Aging.
Today, she is scheduled to find out her punishment in Pulaski County Circuit Court.
Palmer was supposed to have been sentenced a month ago, but the sentencing had to be postponed because a background report was not delivered the required five days before sentencing.
Palmer pleaded guilty in April to 20 of 38 charges of obtaining money under false pretenses.
The charges stemmed from more than $144,000 in funds taken from the Agency on Aging during a five-year period from 2001 to 2006.
Palmer was the director of the agency at the time.
She faces up to 20 years in prison.
