M’s extend East lead

GREENEVILLE — The Pulaski Mariners used two big innings Thursday night — a four-run second and a two-run sixth — to power by the Greeneville Astros 6-3.
The win, coupled with Danville’s 6-5 loss to Elizabethton, gives the Mariners (35-21) a 5 1/2-lead in the Appalachian League’s East Division.
Pulaski’s big four-run second got started when Tommy Johnson reached base on a walk. Jonathan Arias then reached on a force attempt, but a throwing error allowed Johnson to reach third and Arias made it to second.
Blake Trinkler then hit a groundball single to center, scoring both Johnson and Arias for a 2-0 Pulaski lead.
The Mariners added to the scoreboard when George Soto doubled to left scoring Trinkler. Soto later scored when Gabriel Noriega reached base on a fielding error to make the score 4-0.
Pulaski added two more runs in the sixth on only one hit. Greeneville aided the Mariners with two errors and a passed ball during the inning.
Trinkler finished the evening with two hits and two RBI to lead Pulaski. Arias added two hits and one RBI and Dwight Britton chipped in two hits.
Jose Rios started for Pulaski, going four innings, striking out four, walking four and allowing only one hit. But Stephen Penney (2-0) got the win with three innings of relief. Penney allowed one run on three hits and one walk while striking out three Astros.
Blake nation retired the last two Astro batters to record his 10th save.
Pulaski continues its three-game trip to Greeneville tonight and Saturday before an off-night Sunday. The Mariners return home Monday night to face the same Greeneville Astros.
The three-game set with Greeneville next week begins a six-day homestand for Pulaski. Johnson City comes to town Thursday – Saturday before the Mariners hit the road for the final regular season three-game series at Bristol.
The three-game Appalachian League Playoffs follow Aug. 27-29.
