Johnson City rallies past Pulaski

PULASKI – The Johnson City Cardinals scored 12 runs off the Pulaski Mariners’ bullpen to rally past the M’s 13-7 at Calfee Park Tuesday night. The Cardinals took advantage of three Mariners errors and eight stolen bases to earn the victory.
Despite the loss, the Mariners maintain a 3-1/2 game lead over the Danville Braves for first place in the East Division of the Appalachian League.
Pulaski (28-19) jumped out to a 5-1 lead after three innings highlighted by a two-run homerun by Juan Fuentes in the third and a two-run single from Gabriel Noriega in the second. Tommy Johnson added a solo homerun for Pulaski in the sixth inning.
Johnson City (25-22) took advantage of a three-run error during their four-run fifth inning to take the lead for good before putting the game away with a six-run eighth. Luis Mateo had five hits for the Cardinals, while Osvaldo Morales added two hits including a homerun with two RBIs and four runs scored.
The Mariners received a solid start from pitcher Taylor Lewis before the bullpen and the defense let Pulaski down. Lewis went four innings, allowing one run on four hits while striking out seven Cardinals.
Jose Rios, Jordan Alvis and Kyle Brown combined to give up eight earned runs on nine hits in just under four innings of relief.
Alvis (2-1) took the loss for the M’s despite not giving up a single hit in his one inning of work. Alvis was betrayed by his control, however, as he allowed three walks in his appearance.
Noriega, Fuentes and Mario Martinez contributed two RBI’s apiece to lead Pulaski’s offensive attack. Johnson also added in a run on his solo homer in the sixth.
The two teams will continue their three-game series on Wednesday night at historic Calfee Park.
