Pulaski squeaks by Danville 2-1

DANVILLE – The Pulaski Mariners utilized a sixth inning Guy Welsh homerun and strong pitching from starter Taylor Lewis to hold on and defeat the Danville Braves 2-1 Thursday night.
The victory ended the Mariners’ (26-16) two-game losing skid and put Pulaski 3-1/2 games ahead of the Braves (23-20) for the lead in the East Division.
The M’s jumped to an early lead in the second inning when Jonathan Arias scored on a Gabriel Noriega single.
From there the Braves were shut down by starter Lewis (1-3), who went six strong innings, allowing no runs on four hits, while striking out two Danville batters.
The Mariners received some much-needed insurance in the sixth inning when Welsh slugged a solo homerun, putting the M’s up 2-0.
Pulaski survived a scare in the seventh inning when reliever Stephen Penney allowed two straight hits to put runners on second and third with only one out.
A fielder’s choice allowed the Braves to score, cutting the lead to 2-1 and moving the tying run to third base. However, Penney was able to settle down and get out of the inning with no additional damage done.
The M’s survived another Danville rally in the bottom of the ninth inning when a Braves single followed by a fielding error allowed the tying run to reach third base.
Closer Philip Roy, who had come on in the eighth inning, was able to slam the door on Danville by striking out the previous night’s hero, Mike Elkerson, swinging.
The Mariners wrap up their road trip tonight in Danville before starting a six-game home stand Saturday night.
The M’s will play the Braves again from August 2-4, and then will face the Johnson City Cardinals from August 5-7.
