Lady Cardinals are champions

PULASKI – The Pulaski Lady Cardinals are the Southwest VA Softball Associations (SWVSA) East Division champions for the second consecutive year. The Lady Cardinals finished second overall in the SWVSA after a close loss to the Galax Maroon team at Randolph Park on July 9. The Lady Cardinals were the SWVSA champions in 2007.
The East Division consisted of the Dublin G-Force, Dublin Stars, Pulaski Thunder and the Wytheville Braves. The West Division consisted of the Galax Maroon and Blue, Rural Retreat Orange and Black, Jackson Eagles and Sheffey Wildcats.
The Lady Cardinals traveled to Wytheville to take on the Braves in the opening round of the tournament. The Cardinals thrashed the Braves 25-8 to advance to the second round. Leah Nichols and Amber Cannoy reached base five times, scoring four and three runs respectively. Sara Wright reached base on all four of her plate appearances while scoring four runs. Britta Cannoy reached base four times scoring on three of those trips. B. Cannoy was also the pitcher of decision in the game.
The Lady Cardinals then returned home to Loving Field for the remainder of the East Division bracket. They defeated the Dublin Stars 13-10 in the second round. B. Cannoy scored all four times she reached base, while A. Cannoy and Halle Ramsey reached base twice and scored two runs apiece. Ramsey was also the winning pitcher.
In game three of the tournament, the Lady Cardinals defeated the Dublin G-Force 17-2 to advance to the winner’s bracket. Leah Nichols, B. Cannoy, Wright and Katelyn Dobbins all reached base three times. Nichols and Cannoy scored all three times, while Wright and Dobbins scored two runs apiece. B. Cannoy was also the winning pitcher.
Game four saw the Lady Cardinals lose their only game in the Eastern bracket by a 14-10 count to the Dublin G-Force. The loss to the G-Force set the stage for a second game to determine the Eastern Division champion. The Lady Cardinals responded with a decisive 17-2 victory.
Several players had big games for the Cardinals. B. Cannoy reached base four times while scoring twice; Dobbins was 3-for-4 with two runs scored; Ramsey and Tiffani Houston were each 3-for-3 and scored three runs apiece, while Nichols and Tiffany Underwood reached base twice, scoring both times. B. Cannoy earned the win on the mound.
After almost a three-week layoff the Lady Cardinals met the Galax Maroon for the SWVSA championship on a muggy July night at Randolph Park. After rallying twice the Cardinals fell to the Maroons 14-11. B. Cannoy went 4-for-4 with two runs scored, while Wright was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and A. Cannoy was 3-for-4 with one run scored.
