Mariners slug way past Twins

ELIZABETHTON – Putting an end to any ideas of an extended slump, the Pulaski Mariners utilized powerful bats and a powerful bullpen to defeat the Elizabethton Twins 4-3 Thursday night.
The win kept Pulaski (20-9) two-and-a-half games ahead of the Danville Braves – who were also victorious Thursday night – for first place in the East Division of the Appalachian League.
The Twins jumped out to an early 3-0 lead thanks to three doubles in the first inning off of Mariners starter Brooks Mohr. Mohr (3-1) would settle down the rest of the way, allowing no additional runs and just five more hits in his five total innings of work, striking out seven Twins.
The Mariners rallied back in the fifth inning, scoring four runs off of two homeruns to jump ahead 4-3. Kalian Sams jacked his eighth of the season with a solo shot to start the scoring, followed by Dwight Britton’s (2) three-run homer that put Pulaski ahead for good.
Pulaski relievers Andres Esquibel, Brandon Pullen and Blake Nation combined to one-hit the Twins over the final four innings to seal the victory. Nation was able to pick up his fourth save of the season.
George Soto, Juan Fuentes and Blake Trinkler each contributed two hits apiece to the effort. Jonathan Arias, Sams, Trinkler and Britton each scored a run for Pulaski.
Fuentes continued to swing a hot bat, as his two hits raised his league-leading batting average to .455 for the season. Over the last 10 games Fuentes has gone 18-for-33 for an out-of-this-world .545 average.
The Mariners will look to continue their winning ways again tonight versus Elizabethton. First pitch will be at 7 p.m.
