Moran builds war chest for election bid

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Democrat Brian Moran’s gubernatorial campaign will report $1.38 million raised during the first half of this year for a primary still nearly a year away.
The House of Delegates member from Alexandria and chairman of the House Democratic Caucus began July with about $800,000 on hand.
A spokesman for state Senator Creigh Deeds, Moran’s rival in next June’s primary, says Deeds will release his totals on the July 15 filing deadline.
The total new money raised by Virginians for Brian Moran came to $990,000. Moran also had $393,000 transferred from existing political action committees he controls.
Moran’s campaign spent about $587,000 in its first six months since Moran announced his candidacy in January.
Attorney General Bob McDonnell, the uncontested Republican nominee for governor, plans to release his report this week.

Moran’s fundraising total put him slightly ahead of the $1.24 million that Democratic Governor Tim Kaine took in during the first six months of 2004.
