Woman ejected from vehicle in I-81 accident

DRAPER — A Wytheville woman was injured Thursday after being ejected from her vehicle in a wreck on Interstate 81.
Virginia State Police Sgt. S.E. Lowe said 60-year-old Barbara S. Lafon was airlifted to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital following the 8:20 a.m. wreck.
Lafon was listed in good condition at the hospital this morning.
Initially, State Police thought Lafon’s 1997 Ford Explorer clipped the rear of a tractor-trailer after the truck stalled in the left southbound lane of the interstate.
However, further investigation revealed the truck’s brakes locked up after the Explorer collided with the right rear of the trailer.
According to an accident report filed by Trooper J.A. Stitt, the Explorer struck the truck and then spun into the median and overturned, throwing Lafon from the vehicle.
Lowe said the trucker was traveling at 65 miles per hour in the left lane at the time of the collision, so Lafon “had to be running faster than that” to hit the truck from behind.
The 2000 model tractor-trailer was driven by Gary L. Haley, 55, of Brownsboro, Texas. He was not injured.
Lafon is charged with reckless driving, according to the report.
The Explorer is a total loss. Damage to the truck trailer is minimal and is estimated at about $1,000.
The wreck occurred in the southbound lanes of I-81 at mile marker 92.5.
