Traffic stop leads to arrest

CARROLL COUNTY — A traffic stop in Carroll County earlier this week resulted in drug charges being filed against two men.
Carroll County Sheriff F. Warren Manning said 34-year-old Sidney Schaefer of Galax was arrested at the scene of the traffic stop, but the driver of the vehicle allegedly fled on foot and hasn’t yet been apprehended.
According to Manning, Deputy Mark Dickerson noticed a vehicle allegedly being driven in a reckless manner and at a high rate of speed on Hebron Road. The vehicle allegedly attempted to elude police by turning into a private driveway from Iron Ridge Road.
The two male suspects got out of the vehicle “acting very suspicious,” the sheriff said.
After obtaining permission to search the car, drugs and drug paraphernalia were confiscated, Manning said. When the drugs were located, he said, the driver of the car fled on foot.
Manning said Schaefer was arrested on charges of possession of Schedule II narcotics with intent to sell. He is being held in New River Valley Regional Jail in lieu of $7,500 bond.
Warrants were obtained for the man believed to be the other suspect, 26-year-old Shawn Toth of Woodlawn, the sheriff said.
Toth faces charges of Possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance with intent to sell, Possession of a Schedule I or II controlled substance, possession of marijuana, possession of controlled paraphernalia, obstruct a law enforcement officer, reckless driving and driving with a suspended license.
