Va. Guard soldiers mobilized

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — Members of the Virginia National Guard are being sent to Afghanistan to train that nation’s army and police.
Maj. Gen. Robert B. Newman Jr., the adjutant general of Virginia, announced the mobilization Tuesday. Newman says two 16-member teams will train and mentor members of the Afghan National Army and the Afghan National Police.
Maj. Mike Martin of Afton says the Virginia soldiers will provide training in logistics, tactics, strategic planning, military decision-making process, and battalion and brigade level staff operations.
Following training in Virginia and at Fort Riley, Kansas, the teams are expected to be deployed to Afghanistan in late August or early September.
